Emerging at Junctions - Left and Right

Identifying The Junction

The best way to deal with emerging at junctions, is to identify the junction in good time.

This will set you up to deal successfully with it.

Before going into the rest of the routine, you need to first of all, know if its an open or closed junction.

Emerging Left

Once you have identified the junction then you can procede with the MSPSGL routine

Mirrors - Centre and Left

Signal - Timing - If there is a junction or car park before the emerge, wait until you are at least halfway passed it and then signal left.

Position - Normal driving position

Speed - If its a closed junction thenn be prepared to stop or at least around  5 mph

If its an open junction - generally between 10-15 mph.

Gear - Usually if its open and clear the 2nd gear is fine

closed junction would be first gear

Look - Right, Left and Right again

adi part 3 emerging

Look - Right, Left and Right Minimum

The minimum observation at a junction regardless if its open or closed

is Right, Left, Right as a minimum.

As you are doing this you need to look back for your road position to make sure that you are following the kerb around to the left, and making sure that you are staying in position

Minimum Observations

The biggest reason for driving test failures for at least the last 12 years has been a lack of observation at junctions. It needs to be a minimum of Right - Left- Right.

Right - Is there any traffic coming, do you have the space to pull out and get to the speed limit before it gets to you.

LEFT - Has anything that has just driven past you pulled up by the junction?

Is there any vehicles parked on the opposite side of the road? - If there is, then any vehicles coming towards you, will be on your side of the road to get past them

Right - Double check that it is still clear and safe to pull out into the flow of traffic

The same MSPSGL routine will apply when emerging right. Again the main difference will be whether the junction is open or closed. MIRRORS - Centre and Right SIGNAL - Right POSITION - Just to the left of the centre line SPEED - Closed Junction - less than 5 mph to a complete stop. Open junction - Around 10 mph GEARS - 2nd if open - 1st if closed LOOK - Right, Left, Right again

Emerging Right

The same MSPSGL routine will apply when emerging right. Again the main difference will be whether the junction is open or closed.

MIRRORS - Centre and Right

SIGNAL - Right

POSITION - Just to the left of the centre line

SPEED -

Closed Junction - less than 5 mph to a complete stop.

Open junction - Around 10 mph

GEARS - 2nd if open - 1st if closed

LOOK - Right, Left, Right again

Emerging Right - Stopping At The Line

With most junctions, its good to practice coming up to the give way lines and stopping at them.

This will get you the best view of the road that you are emerging onto.

You can get used to doing this by finding FOCAL points,

So when emerging tright and having to stop at the line, the usual focal point is the Give way line - half way on the right mirror casing -

How can we try and judge the gap and whether its safe to pull out or not? For the cars coming towards you from the right, you can think, can i walk across the road before they get to me For cars coming from the left - you could think Can i walk across and back again before they get to me. Dont forget its not just can i pull out, but can i get to the speed limit of the road before they get to me?

Emerging with Restricted View

When deciciding whther to pull out or not. If your view is restricted because of parked vehicles you cannot presume it is safe to emerge.

You need to peep and creep to see if its clear

You need to keep creeping forward until you can see what is coming down the road towards you.

Not just if the gap infront of you is clear.

Not only is pulling out a matter of judging the gap, but you also need to be able to adjust it depending on the speed limit of the road that you are emerging onto. So the faster the speed limit of the new road, the bigger the gap you need and more that you just need to 'FLOOR IT' to get to the speed limit as quickly as possible Pulling out and making the car behind hit the brakes to slowdown is an instant fail on test, because basically if it wasn't for that car hitting the brakes, it would have smashed into the back of you.
